I'm starting this fun thread about animal fun facts, trivia, and maybe a quiz or two here and there! Please join in with your tidbits of information, quizzes or any fun animal story. Hope you enjoy! I'll start off with an amusing little fact.
A group of 12 or more cows is called a "flink"
-
Good one GG! I only knew 2 of them, so had to look them up. I found there are many birds with multiple group names. :) For example, a group of Ravens has also been called an "unkindness" in addition to the answer here. :)
-
GG, very cool little quiz, thanks for posting it. I knew 4 lol
Starlings = Murmuration
Geese = Gaggle
Hummingbird = Charm
Murder = Crows
Ravens = Conspiracy! LOL
-
Pagent, once again some really cool info! Thank you!
We now know a group of baboons is called a "Troop!" And that James Lipton wrote a book on venery terms, who knew!?
-
Pagent and Red, those are some fun facts. Red, I could sure use that nictitating membrane here on windy days. :)
-
GG - I knew Goose, Crows, Starlings, and Quail.
Here's a few fun facts I found googling:
Despite their size, elephants can be turned off by the smallest of critters. One study found that they avoid eating a type of acacia tree that is home to ants. Underfoot, ants can be crushed, but an elephant wants to avoid getting the ants inside its trunk, which is full of sensitive nerve endings.
An adult giraffe's heart is 2 feet long and weighs about 20 pounds. A Giraffe's tongue is almost 2 feet long.
An aardvark can eat 50,000 termites in one sitting.
-
"a gathering of baboons is called a congress" That description is so pertinent and so open for comments that I'm pretty sure none are needed. ;) ("Maybe I just did)
-
OK here is a link with the Plica Semilunaris... which is the fold of skin right behind our tear duct. It is a vestige of what was once our Nictating Membrane!!! I am honored to share something in common with our beloved bald Eagles!!!!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plica_semilunaris_of_conjunctiva
-
Red thanks for posting your link.
Finn, I can't seem to get the sample sounds and songs to work. I'd love to hear them.
Did you know that: At the end of the Beatles' song "A Day in the Life", an ultrasonic whistle, audible only to dogs, was recorded by Paul McCartney for his Shetland sheepdog?
-
"a gathering of baboons is called a congress" That description is so pertinent and so open for comments that I'm pretty sure none are needed. ;) ("Maybe I just did)
Yep, plenty of responses played through my head, but restraint is good sometimes. ;D
On trivia...
I was in flight school weather class and the instructor was talking about cues in nature to determine prevailing wind direction.
Cows in a field face away from stiff wind
Horses face into the same wind
An eagle will land into a wind greater than 5 knots
I have seen all those rules defied, but wildlife are in tune with their environment.
I saw Mom Decorah do a downwind landing with a huge stick and everyone in the nest got bonked as she tried that landing.
-
Tx.....Mom Decorah does that with the sticks just to keep us all amused!!!!! ;)
-
Tx.....Mom Decorah does that with the sticks just to keep us all amused!!!!! ;)
That explains the text I got from Mom five minutes before the landing.
"Watch this landing Ninja!" :o
-
OH yes GG!!! I have followed the story of John and Shoep...such a tender loving story!!
-
GG, thank you for posting this story, I've not seen it before. My eyes are drooling. Unfortunately 3rd link is unavailable.
-
Adult mayflies only live 1 day and can be as short as 1-2 hours.
-
Here is a very heart warming dog story I came across. Maybe some of you are familiar with it already.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6SCwyVuItzQ
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3nykFxHOcXs
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=btEJ2PbeAk4
I hope I have the videos in order.
Yes such a touching story, I followed the story. Thanks for posting. I never saw the 2nd video.... :)
-
GG, I do remember this story - a true love story. I'm so glad this dog found his forever friend.
Jf, now I'm wondering how long the infant and teenage phases are for the mayfly.
-
Faith...at least the Mayfly doesn't have to wait long for their kids to grow up and leave the house do they now??? ;)
-
Adult mayflies only live 1 day and can be as short as 1-2 hours.
And yet we continue to have new mayflies being born.
-
I think I found the answer to my question here:
http://biofreshblog.com/2011/05/16/the-mayflys-lifecycle-a-fascinating-fleeting-story/
Well, sort of. :)
-
what a wonderful story... I hope this is the right place for it :) It gave me happy tears
http://ac360.blogs.cnn.com/2013/09/05/operation-puppy-rescue/?iref=allsearch
-
Faith, yup, they live to reproduce.
LBL, thanks so much for posting this awesome story! Love a happy ending!
-
I think this has been posted in another room recently, I thought I would share here as well : )
Here is a release video of a Juevie in NJ :) http://videos.nj.com/star-ledger/2013/08/video_bald_eagle_release_a_suc.html?fb_action_ids=646393352047045&fb_action_types=og.recommends&fb_source=other_multiline&action_object_map=%7B%22646393352047045%22%3A632648043423438%7D&action_type_map=%7B%22646393352047045%22%3A%22og.recommends%22%7D&action_ref_map=%5B%5D
-
LBL, thanks so much! That is one beautiful bird. She flew strong, awesome sight! I wish all the best for her.
-
Loosely animal related: A great and perhaps lesser known Beatle's song originally titled "Hey Bullfrog" was changed to "Hey Bulldog" by Lennon after McCartney started barking during the recording!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iWdLPGKQRXc
(Lennon McCartney collaboration)
-
LB, two wonderful stories! Thank you!
Beacon, could it be lightening bugs?
-
Beacon, a skunk?
-
LOL, that is one odorific question! LOL
-
Beacon, LOL on the correct answer stinks!!! :D :D :D
Jf, congrats on having an answer that stinks! ;D
-
Adult mayflies only live 1 day and can be as short as 1-2 hours.
Gives new meaning to "Live fast, die young ..."
-
Did you know that: At the end of the Beatles' song "A Day in the Life", an ultrasonic whistle, audible only to dogs, was recorded by Paul McCartney for his Shetland sheepdog?
Her name was Sally. There is a picture of her on one of the albums, but I don't fancy digging through boxes to find it.
I can remember the name of almost every dog I've ever met but have a hard time remembering human names. I don't think that makes me a bad person.
-
TW, I think I'd rather live a little slower and stick around longer. lol.
Great info on Paul's dog's name! Sally McCartney was a lucky pooch! Thanks for posting!
-
Wow TW. The Mayfly does have the shortest lifespan. As far as insects go, the Queen Ant can live as long as 28 yrs. And as far as animals, the Ocean Quahog (a clam) found in the mid Atlantic continental shelf, was found to be 220 yrs old by counting its growth rings and the Gastrotrich (a minute aquatic animal) lives the shortest - 3 days. It has a wormlike ciliated body.
-
Thanks Glog. So many animal fun facts are being shared!
-
Here is an article on the bald eagle population come back in Pennsylvania. Currently on the "threatened" list in PA, the Game Commission is considering downgrading the BE status to protected. The PA Game Commission has put together a documentary on the successful return of BEs in Pennsylvania. The documentary is scheduled to be screened at various sites throughout the state. If anyone is interested in the documentary, the sites, dates and times are listed at the bottom of the article.
http://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/film-celebrates-bald-eagles-success-222325091.html
-
jf - A great article and story out of Pennsylvania about the comeback of Bald Eagles there. The documentary sounds really good and looks like we'll eventually get to see it online. Part of a sentence struck me, " People have an indescribable connection with bald eagles..." Don't we know it?! ;)
-
I would love to see the film and do hope they make it available online eventually. Thanks JF!
-
Glog, indescribable describes it! lol
You're welcome Faith. I'd love to see that doc some day.
-
GG, thanks, a super frog I'd say!!
The average goldfish memory span is between 3 - 5 seconds!
-
GG, thanks, a super frog I'd say!!
The average goldfish memory span is between 3 - 5 seconds!
I spent over 30 years in higher education and I just know someone has written a doctoral dissertation (after years of research) about goldfish memory. And now that we know about the the goldfish memory span, now what? Sometimes I wonder. ;D
-
Bob, I wonder too. I wonder if people say I have a memory like a goldfish. :D
-
Finn, that is such a cool fun fact! Who knew? (besides the researchers, of course ;) )
-
Thanks Finn. That's a great animal fun fact!! I had not heard of this bird before.
-
. It turns out that their energy consumption is so low that they can live off their body fat for more than 3 months!
http://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Common_Poorwill/id
Shoot Finn that is NOTHING I could live off of MY Body fat for probably a year!!!!! ;) :D :(
-
gg, thanks for letting us know about Migaloo and MJ. Since Australia is heading into spring now, they may start heading back to Antarctica soon.
-
This may be old news to some of you, but I just saw it on CNN this morning. Migaloo, an albino whale, has been recently sighted again migrating North near Australia. She is accompanied by her calf--Also albino!!! What beautiful creatures!!
http://news.discovery.com/earth/oceans/the-return-of-migaloo-and-baby-white-whale-130626.htm
If you go to this site you will find a newspaper article. If you click on the video link you will get info on whale vomit. That is not exactly what I wanted to share with you!
Here is the actual Migaloo web site.
http://www.migaloowhale.org/
Thanks GG! umm, I skipped the video link in that first link. LOL
-
OH I love it!! THank you so much for sharing the information on Migaloo! ( Love the name too!!!) I Will have to do some checking into how long they live and such!! Sounds like he has been around for a while!!!
-
Actually I watched the whale vomit video, and found it quite interesting! lol
-
JF, can we expect a lesson and quiz on that when chat opens next season? :D ;)
-
Faith, I'm formulating that quiz now! lol
-
Faith, I'm formulating that quiz now! lol
I Guess that means we need to actually WATCH the vomit video??? lol
-
Finn, I read the update on Whimbrel, I find that mileage just astonishing!
-
I do recall reading that the amount traveled was during the course of 5 trips, still amazing to me!!
-
It sure is! That's still over 12,000 miles per trip!
-
Here's an interesting vid on giraffes tongues provided by Animal Planet.
http://animal.discovery.com/tv-shows/other/videos/fooled-by-nature-giraffes-blue-tongue.htm
-
LOL, GG. It hurts just thinking about it.
-
LOLOL, we are learning so much here!
-
I found these two "facts" about cockroaches. (The same site stated that bald eagles mate while airborne, and I know that is not true)
A cockroach will live nine days without its head, before it starves to death. (so it doesn't do any good to withhold food from my cockroaches?)
The cockroach has a high resistance to radiation and is the creature most likely to survive a nuclear war. (why doesn't this surprise me?)
The same site also had this little tidbit:
Turtles can breathe through their um...hind ends.
-
I was curious as to what happened to our honey bees during the winter months and found this fascinating method of surviving the cold weather!!! http://davesgarden.com/guides/articles/view/1699/
Here is the pertinent information but I included the link because there is other interesting information too!!
Honeybees have a very interesting method of winter survival. Honeybees stop flying when the weather drops below 50 degrees. When the temperature drops below that, the bees all crowd into the lower central area of the hive and form a "winter cluster." The worker bees huddle around the queen bee at the center of the cluster, shivering in order to keep the center around 80 degrees. The worker bees rotate through the cluster from the outside to the inside so that no bee gets too cold. The outside edges of the cluster stay at about 46-48 degrees. The colder the weather is outside, the more compact the cluster becomes [1].
Hibernating honeybees have been studied and shown to consume up to 30 pounds of stored honey during the winter months, which helps the bees produce body heat. Heat energy is produced by the oxidation of the honey, and circulated throughout the hive by the wing-fanning of worker bees [2]. Note the diagram at right.
On warmer days, bees will venture out for short flights to eliminate body waste. The flights do not last long nor do the bees travel very far because if their body gets too cold they might not be able to return to the hive [1].

-
Thanks Red! Very cool info. That explains what they do and why they are out and about during warmer days in the winter months.
-
Red, Timely post. Thousands of Honey Bees are getting nectar from the ivy blooms (on my house) it's really wild and somewhat scary to watch them. They showed up over the weekend and are still here. I wonder where their hive is.......Me and the dogs exit the house and move quickly away from the house when we go out. lol
-
OK Folks...watch the video and tell me WHAT on Earth this creature is!!!
http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=193_1379475235
-
Thank you for the solution to the mystery Pagent!!!! Although I was having fun, thinking it was a giant underwater creature hitherto unknown to man!!!! ;)
-

Doberman, my honeybees had taken over my hummingbird feeders, much to the hummers' chagrin . I finally had to take the feeders down, normally I don't object to sharing nectar with the bees but since the house is on the market I didn't think it was a good idea to have hundreds of honey bees taking up residence on our back deck!!! lol.
-
Thanks, Pagent. I was thinking along those lines too about the jellyfish.
Here's a fun, factual Owl video that is floating across Face Book. Scroll down to the 2nd pic to click on the video:
http://www.buzzfeed.com/zefrank/true-facts-about-the-owl
-
Well, jellyfish or not, it sure is a strange looking creature!
Glog, thanks for the owl video. That was quite a look into an ear hole.
-
Eeek!!! on the jelly fish creature. Looks like a sort of ghost floating.. who knows what unknown creatures may lurk below in those deep dark waters. (twilight theme plays here) :-[

gg, So very interesting. I have seen ants carry other ants. Thanks
Did you know that butterflies taste with their feet?
A group of flamingos is called a "flamboyance".
Worms communicate by snuggling.
An animal called the "quokka" is the happiest animal in the world.
-
GG, I've seen ants carry dead ants, but I never knew they have a "graveyard!" That's a great tidbit of info, thanks.
Glog, thank you for all the cool facts you posted. I especially like the flamboyance of flamingos!
-
I've seen ants carry other ants too, but never thought about it being a funeral procession.
I'm trying to imagine what it would be like to taste with one's feet. :-\
-
Here's just a little info on quokkas
http://www.australianfauna.com/quokka.php
-
The Brown Snake Eagles from Africa have thick scaly skin on their legs to protect them from venomous snake bites as snakes make up their main diet!

I've seen ants carry other ants too, but never thought about it being a funeral procession.
I'm trying to imagine what it would be like to taste with one's feet. :-\
I've heard that if you put garlic on your feet, you can taste it. I don't know if it's true or not....I do know what a foot taste like though....I've put mine in my mouth enough times! lol
-
Very interesting stuff here. Thanks all.
-
Dobe! LOL. And thanks for stopping in.
-
Dobe, LOLOL at foot in mouth! I think I have heard that about garlic, too.
GG, I know several people who swear it works to put vicks on your feet. I've never tried it.
-
Oh Boy! It's that time again. Wall to wall stink bugs!
http://animal.discovery.com/insects/stinkbug-info.htm
-
GG, LOL. Yeah, that too.
GG, were you able to get rid of them?
-
GG, lol! That's it, a circus of mods. :)
-
GG, lol! That's it, a circus of mods. :)
I suppose there is a comment out there somewhere about mods and a circus but I'll be darned if I'm going to make it. Nope. Not me. Never would think about it. ;D
-
ok...enter Pagent with a comment.... :D
-
LOL, Pagent! This is how we act when the cam and chat comes back on! ;D
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6wnI8Sbj87k
-
Glog, see what you started? LOLOL
-
HAHAHA!! :D ok..let's see now..we went from Flamboyance, to a circus, to Charlie Chaplin, to Monkeys chasing potatoes. ok....that all makes sense. ROFL!!!! Alright...I want what everybody's having. lol
-
GG, lol. Thanks for posting this, it's so darn cute! :D
-
The AKC recognized 2 new dog breeds this year, (in January). The Chinook in the working group and the Portuguese Podengo Pequeno in the hound group!
http://www.dogchannel.com/dogsinreview/news/2013/01/15/new-akc-breeds.aspx
-
LOL Finn. I'll take one of each!!
-
I like the big dog! :-*
-
GG, the Whooping Cranes/Deer video is priceless!
Jf, I had never heard of either of those breeds. Thanks for the info!
-
Want to get your "creepies" on? NatGeo Wild is showing "Super Spider" right now (where I live)
I didn't know that the Orb Spider recycled it's web. They also eat the web when they haven't caught anything in it and they get hungry and need a protein fix! Cool!
http://indianapublicmedia.org/amomentofscience/spiders-recycling/
-
Thanks dobe! lol
GG I'm with you, I really don't like spiders at all. :-\
-
I like watching spiders...on TV. In the last week, I've had 2 huge wolf spiders in the house near my favorite chair. The 1st one was next to my hand. I jumped up grabbed my shoe and...well you know the rest of the story. (hubby gets upset when I do this) The next one I saw was on the wall by my chair. I got my husband, told him if the wanted to save it he better come quick cause I was going "shoe" it away!!! lol He grabbed it and put it outside.
-
I had a wolf spider in my garage a while back. Gross, Gross, Gross!
-
I'm trying to decide if it would be worth $500 to me to do what he had to do. :P
-
I'm sprinkling a little tobasco sauce on all my $100. bills now! ROFLMAO
-
Late to the convo regarding spiders. Around here a species of spider (I was driving and didn't catch which one) are hatching. The young spin a few strands of web and wait for the wind to catch it. They float and fly until they get caught on a tree where they will make their home. Some cities have clouds of webs hanging from their trees.
From experience I can attest to the fact that dogs will eat anything. That was the most expensive dinner I've ever heard of.
-
Jf, I'd be sprinkling a LOT of Tabasco if I HAD $100 bills :D
-
What an amazing Dr. GG. The world could use more compassionate Drs like him.
-
GG, great articles.
-
It's always nice to read about people who still know what is important in this life. Thank you GG!
-
Here's a fun Animal Migration quiz provided by Animal Planet. Good luck!
http://animal.discovery.com/animal-facts/animal-migration-quiz.htm
-
Thank you Jf! That was fun and educational. I had 19 out of 20 right, but will admit I guessed at several and got lucky! ;D
-
I missed 2 on the quiz. Thanks for posting it JF
-
Not necessarily a FUN fact, but a fact, nonetheless. The USFWS offered new protections for 2 of the Audubon's priority bird's list. The Red Knot and the Yellow billed Cuckoo.

Jf, I'd be sprinkling a LOT of Tabasco if I HAD $100 bills :D
A $100 dollar bill........what is that? I've never seen one! I guess I lead a sheltered life. ;D
-
Cool GG! I'm guessing our earliest human doctors learned from them, and possibly from other wildlife as well.
-
Thanks GG. Very impressive!
Here's another quiz provided by Animal Planet. The quiz is Dog Breeds.
http://animal.discovery.com/pets/dog-breeds-quiz.htm

8 out of 10. ;D
GG - Really cool on the Oarfish. Quite a find! I would like to know what happened to it though.
Here's a few animal fun facts:
Ostriches can run faster than horses, and the males can roar like lions.
The only dog that doesn't have a pink tongue is the chow.
The leg bones of a bat are so thin that no bat can walk.
A housefly hums in the key of F. ;D
-
Thanks glog. No wonder that fly in my house was humming off key! ;D
I believe some Shar-Peis may have black or blue/black tongues as well
-
Here are some hints in winterizing your yard for birds from the Audubon Society.
http://www.audubonmagazine.org/articles/living/winterize-your-yard-birds

I only got 5 correct. I think I flunked, and I'm a cat owner too! Now, if the quiz had been about cat attitudes I think I could have aced it!
-
LOL Faith. I'll try to find a cat attitude quiz!
-
Here's a video about the "Top 10 Animal Dance Moves" :D
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sOksAFJajg8&feature=em-subs_digest

Glog, thanks for posting the Animal Dancing vid. Very cool! Love the Bird of Paradise and the Clarke's Grebes were beautiful. And the Capped Manakin was cool but it's moon walk has nothing on MJ. ;)
-
Thanks Glog! I really enjoyed that. Loved the Grebes, and lol about the Capped Manakin, Jf!
-
;D
-
I'm a cat owner too, and only got 5 right...makes you feel inferior in a way ;D
-
I loved the grebe's too...very cool video

So cute! Thanks Jf!
-
I just took the animal test. I was a wolf, but one of the questions I answered didn't feel quite right so I took it again. Said I was a Bear! So maybe I like being in a pack till it's time to hibernate? lol
JF, those pups are real cuties.
-
Dobe, maybe you're a Bolf!
-
Or a Bearwolf ;D
-
Babies and puppies napping! Too Cute!

Very sweet, Jf! Two best friends in the making. :)
-
I love your turkey fun facts GG! Thanks for posting them. :D
-
Yes, GG. What fun facts they are! Thank you. Didn't know female turkeys only "cluck".
And speaking of Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, here's a video clip of their historic moon landing, July 20, 1969...."Houston. Tranquility Base Here. The Eagle has landed." :) at about the 4:16 mark.

Here is the Audubon 2013 YEAR IN REVIEW:
PROTECTING BIRDS AND THEIR HABITAT
11 Million Acres Saved in Alaska. The Interior Department announced permanent protection for 11 million acres of critical Arctic bird habitat in Northwest Alaska. Many of our most familiar migratory birds began life in this vast wilderness of the Western Arctic Reserve.
GBBC Goes Global. The Great Backyard Bird Count became a worldwide event in 2013. More than 104,000 people from 107 countries identified a staggering 4,004 species!
A Stork Occasion in the Everglades. Audubon and conservation partners reached a settlement that will prevent destruction of more than 1100 acres of wetlands adjacent to the renowned Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary. The sanctuary is home to the nation's largest breeding colony of endangered Wood Storks.
Western Rivers Action Network. All politics is local, a fact that underlay the launch of a new citizen action network to save endangered river habitats in Arizona, New Mexico and Colorado. At stake is habitat for priority birds like the Yellow-billed Cuckoo and vulnerable migrants like the Golden Eagle.
Hummingbirds at Home. Is climate change impacting hummingbird migration or breeding success? We've turned to citizen science for the answers by launching Hummingbirds at Home, a smartphone-based tracking project. In the first year, more than 8,400 volunteer spotters reported over 21,000 hummingbird sightings, adding critical intelligence to conservation efforts.
Saving the River of Raptors. Audubon Pennsylvania and allies won a 10-year battle to prevent construction of a huge car racing resort on the Kittatinny Ridge. The ridge is a critical migratory path for millions of hawks and eagles and is home to the world-famous Hawk Mountain Sanctuary.
-
jfrancl - thanks so much for this very good report from Audubon for 2013. So glad so many acres were saved for protection of habitats in Alaska, the Everglades, and Hawk Mountain Sanctuary. The Great Backyard Bird Count is mind boggling too.

The National Dog Show 2013 results!
http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1869328-national-dog-show-2013-results-best-in-show-and-list-of-winners
-
GG, I never heard of that breed either, before the show. Kind of resembles a miniature Doberman Pinscher
-
Thanks, jf, for the Dog Show results.
I thought in keeping with the spirit of Christmas, I'd share with you a few facts about Reindeer:
Reindeer and Caribou are two names for the same species.
Caribou are known to travel up to 3,000 miles in a year.
Caribou can run as fast as 48 mph, though their normal walk is a slow one.
These antlered deer live in Alaska, Canada, Scandinavia and Russia.
Male reindeer shed their antlers at the end of the mating season in early December. Females, however, keep their thinner antlers throughout the winter. If all the sightings are to be believed, then it is the gals tugging pudgy Santa and the goods through the winter sky. ;)
-
Thanks, Glog. I had heard that about female reindeer before, but had forgotten. :)

Thanks Glog! I have seen a video similar to this in the past, and wonder if it was made by the same man. It was also about crows and problem solving. Very interesting to say the least.

Did you know that fleas can jump up to 200 times their height? This is equivalent to a man jumping the Empire State Building in New York.
Because beavers' teeth never stop growing, they must constantly gnaw on objects to keep them at a manageable length. Their teeth would eventually grow into their brain if they didn't maintain them.
Butterflies have two compound eyes consisting of thousands of lenses, yet they can only see the colors red, green and yellow.
You can tell a turtle's gender by the noise it makes. Males grunt and females hiss.
Dogs' nose prints are as unique as human fingerprints and can be used to identify them.
Hummingbirds are the only birds that can fly backwards and their wings can beat at up to 80 times per second.

TY jfrancl - good quiz! :) I missed the wingspan question - well, according to that quiz... which said the BE wingspan is 8 ft. I wanted to say 6 ft. but it wasn't an option, so I chose 5 ft knowing it was bigger than that. But I think they are pushing it a bit to claim 8-ft wingspan - at least based on the info I have been reading...

Really Groany Bird Jokes!
Where does a bird go when it loses its tail?
The retail store.
Which bird is always out of breath?
A puffin.
How do you identify a bald eagle?
All his feathers are combed over to one side.
Where do birds meet for coffee ?
In a nest-caf?
What do you call a crate of ducks ?
A box of quackers

I'm glad to hear you both thought some of the answers on the quiz missed the mark, because I felt the same way... Makes me see how some mis-leading info can get spread around - even in a teaching scenario. Maybe the authors of that quiz need to spend a little more time reading in the RRP Forum Education threads. ;D

The Murmuration of starlings!
It is said that when one starling changes direction or speed, each of the other birds in the flock responds to the change, and they do so nearly simultaneously regardless of the size of the flock. The information moves across the flock very quickly and with nearly no degradation. The researchers describe it as a high signal-to-noise ratio.

Here's a great short article with accompanying video regarding a researcher discovering an apparent extra magnetic sense used to hunt bu red foxes - the only animal at this time discovered to use magnetic sense to hunt. But maybe others do, too! This gem of a link was uncovered on RRP FB article today about what's moving under that snow cover... It's worth the time to read and see this if you are interested in such discoveries about different kinds of animals. I thought it was excellent! http://www.npr.org/blogs/krulwich/2014/01/03/259136596/youre-invisible-but-ill-eat-you-anyway-secrets-of-snow-diving-foxes is the link to the page with the short accompanying article, which I recommend reading before viewing the short video on that page which illustrates the points in the article. This was taken from RRP FB article posted today at https://www.facebook.com/pages/Raptor-Resource-Project/103786266324668?fref=nf with the picture of the mouse in the snow. You would have to click on the blue, "See more" there to expand the article and then find this interesting info about a discovery by a Czech researcher about how the red fox hunts and dives to catch unseen small critters under deep snow. Or just click the first link I mentioned in this post above. :) ;) :D Enjoy! :)
-
Glo, cool vid thank you
Baz very interesting thanks for sharing
GG LOL, too cute, thanks for posting
-
baz - I came here just now to post your fox article, so thanks for posting that. It is amazing how they know where their prey are under all that snow.
gg - those surfing dogs know what they're doing. Equally amazing.
-
glo, lol, it was pretty funny in that video to see them dive head first into deep snow - appearing to do a head-stand in the snow - with just their hindquarters and wiggling tail sticking straight up out of the deep snow! More amazing to see them emerge with the prey!!! And the description of them apparently finding a certain angle and direction of attack based on their magnetic sense giving them an 80% chance of successful snow-dives just blew me away. I have enjoyed watching the red foxes who hunt and prowl (and apparently raise cubs, tho I've never seen the cubs!) on the property where I live. They are so beautiful, and I have enjoyed learning things about them I never knew before. No snow-diving foxes here, though, LOL, b/c we don't get that much snow here. :D

Elephants are the only animal that can't jump and all polar bears are left-handed.
-
When the British first landed on Australia, they noticed a strange animal that had a long tail, hopped around, and carried its young in a pouch on its belly. Not speaking the native language, they "signed" and gestured to the aboriginal people, asking what the animal was called. The natives answered Kan Ghu Ru, and thus the animal was named-kangaroo. Later, the Brits found out Kan Ghu Ru means "We don't understand you." :D

That is so interesting Finn and makes total sense. I have read that molting can be stressful to some birds and that they use extra energy to generate new feathers. We are always learning new information, very cool.
Thanks Finn.
-
Gosh, Finn - what an interesting article on molting. The first thing I thought of was our Decorah at SOAR. Kay Neumann put his Ambassador training on "hold" so that he could have a "no stress" period while the normal molting is going on in hopes those problematic tail feathers will all grow in. Sounds like she also realizes what extra stress a bird goes through while molting feathers. Here is the link to Decorah's training updates from the SOAR website:

What interested me was the range of behavior changes that could occur from molting stress--e.g., stopping vocalization, irritability, retreating to quiet spaces and wanting to be alone--sounds like some people I know--lol.
lol, Finn! :D I love your quote by Rachel Carson, btw.
-
I'm a chipmunk, but was almost a duckling or a turtle. :)
Finn, thank you for sharing the article about molting.
-
giddy up, giddy up. I am a pony. That was fun.
Loved the molting article. Thanks, Finn.
Make that two ponies! lol

Did you know?
Elephants' ears are a little like an air conditioner. As elephants flap their wet ears on a hot day, the blood flowing through the many blood vessels in the ears is cooled. This, in turn, cools their large bodies on warm days.
-
So that's why Dumbo's so cool!! Thanks jf! :D
-
Just saw the birds on wires, GG - it's lovely! Also just found the 'what animal are you' quiz and turns out I'm a bear cub. ;D

They are beautiful dogs-I actually looked for Pharaoh Hounds when getting our first dog, but couldn't find any local breeders. We went with the Vizsla eventually...

She was absolutely beautiful, and just a great pet(but very high energy!!!). They are such wonderful dogs we were compelled to get Vizsla/German Shorthair mixes for our next dogs- the now infamous Izzy and Sam! :)
