Iowa conservation officers are looking for the poacher who shot a bald eagle and removed its head and talons.

A hiker discovered the bird's carcass on Wednesday in Yellow Banks County Park near the Des Moines River on the city's southeast side, according to a news release from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.

But warm weather and the state of the body has made it difficult to estimate when the eagle died.

?We don?t have much to go on so we need some help. If anyone saw or heard shots in this area during the first two weeks of the year, we would like to know about it,? said State Conservation Officer Nate Anderson.

Anderson said people can use the Turn in Poachers website at www.iowadnr.gov/tip or by calling the hotline at 1-800-532-2020. Information can be left anonymously.

The DNR is holding a press conference at 12:30. Check back with The Des Moines Register for updates.

Bald eagles are a state and federally protected species since 1940 under the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act. Violators can receive a maximum fine of $5,000 or one year imprisonment with $10,000 or not more than two years in prison for a second conviction, according to U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Felony convictions carry a maximum fine of $250,000 or two years of imprisonment. The fine doubles for an organization.

Rewards are provided for information leading to arrest and conviction for violating the act.
