Egg #2 Pipping As Red-tailed Hawk Chick Fed By Big Red!!! ? April 30, 2019
https://youtu.be/HXdatwINyPw via cornell lab bird cam
The second Red-tailed Hawk chick is on its way! In this spectacular view of the eggs and chick, you can see the soon-to-be hatchling's bill through the pip (or break) in the egg's shell.

A Red-tailed Hawk pair has been nesting above Cornell University?s athletic fields since at least the 2012, making use of two different light towers for their nest sites. In 2012 and 2015, they used a tower near Fernow Hall, and in 2013, 2014, and 2016, they used the tower nearest Weill Hall. We installed cameras at both of these sites to get a better look at the intimate behavior of these well-known birds as they raise their young amid the bustle of a busy campus.

All three Red-tailed Hawk chicks have hatched! Get an amazing look at the third chick "I3"  while it hatches from the egg after Big Red raises up for a feeding. As the hatchling works its way out of the shell, Big Red offers a bird foot to the nestlings as they jockey for the best position to get a bite. Good luck to Big Red, Arthur, and their chicks as they transition into the nestling period!

Cornell Red Tailed Hawk Cam ~ Chick Caught & Pulled Out Of Nest Cup
https://youtu.be/jSKdxCAsdm8 via lady hawk
Big Red gets up from brooding & one of the I's is caught on her and gets pulled out of the nest cup. BR stands on the side of the nest and then we see the chick is on the rails of the nest. BR starts to feed the other I's as the chick tries to get back but is stuck on the rails. BR returns to brood and is right there to keep an eye on the baby and she preens it. She will get up and bingo- the chick scurries up and  goes back underneath her and into the nest cup! All is well!

Juvenile Plumage Surfacing On Red-tailed Hawk Chicks ? May 29, 2019
https://youtu.be/rdYr4eKZjwk via cornell lab bird cams
The "I"s are looking more grown up everyday. With about two weeks left until fledging, these nestling Red-tailed Hawks are beginning to molt quickly into their juvenile plumages. At about 30 days post-hatch, the chicks' heads won't be covered in natal down for long. Their tail and wing feathers are already well-developed, and the breast and leg feathers are starting to fill in!

Hello Forum Friends!!! This is a couple snips from the Cornell Labs year of 2020 video (link below).  Out of all of their cams, I see that I am a regular fan of most of them;  Royal Albatross ((Pippa)), Bermuda Cahow, White Tailed Tropic BirdHellgate Ospreys ((Iris))Cornell Red Tailed Hawks ((Big Red & Arthur)), American Kestrels, & a couple feeder cams. This is an absolutely BEAUTIFUL video :)

Big Red is banded on her right leg. From banding records we know she was banded in nearby Brooktondale, New York, during her first autumn in 2003.
Arthur was first spotted on Cornell University campus as a fledgling in 2016. He is unbanded. The pair first spent time together in April 2017, after Big Red’s previous mate, Ezra, had died. The hawks completed their first breeding season together in 2018.
Big Red’s former mate Ezra and her had raised successful broods every year from 2012–2016.  He died in March 2017.

They make use of two different light towers for their nest sites. In 2012, 2015, 2018, 2019, and 2020 they used a tower near Fernow Hall, and in 2013, 2014, and 2016, they used the tower nearest Weill Hall. Red Tailed Hawks Cornell University Ithaca NY home of Arthur & Big Red with little ones K1 K2 & K3
How the chicks got their names...
In 2012, hawk fans called the chicks C1, C2, and C3, “C” after Cornell. In 2013 the chicks were called D1, D2 and D3. In 2014 the chicks were called E1, E2, and E3. In 2015 the chicks were called F1, F2, and F3. In 2016 the chicks were called G1, G2, and G3. In 2018 the chicks were called H1, H2, and H3. This naming convention will continue to be applied to each successful brood as long as the hawks continue to nest in their campus territory.

6 am  the male flew in.  She refused to get up.  The past 2 days he's just flown off and returned with prey.  Today he insisted she leave.

Ensues the sweetest gentlest 'fight' I've ever seen!
He stands over her, touchs her with his beek, bumps her with his chest, increasingly insistent.  Finally she gets up and leaves.

I blew up the eggs and saw nothing - but after she turned them there appeared to be a hole in one.  (not a golf term)

I will keep an eye. Hatch is close if not today.

Welcome to the world "L3." The Cornell Hawks' third chick hatched around 2:22 A.M in the early morning hours of April 25. Later that morning, Big Red takes a break from the nest to reveal three chicks, one egg, and L3's empty eggshell on the edge of the nesting bowl. Watch L1 and L2 engage in a bit of sibling rivalry while hours-old L3 works on getting its bearings. Watch live at allaboutbirds.org/cornellhawks

Arthur 'on the left' brings   lunch for Big Red
A little history on the couple and also see the RRP thread at https://raptorresource.org/raptorresource/forum/index.php?topic=2590.0

June 13, 2022   Nestling "L3" became the third young hawk to fledge from the nest, with a confident first flight from the railing off across Tower Road. Watch as L3 hops up to the railing, takes in the view, then watches as a sibling divebombs out of the nest just moments before L3 makes the jump as well. BABY HAWK
Aug 1, 2022 post on bcaw

On the night of July 31, a young Red-tailed Hawk was found on the ground near Cornell Universitys unable to fly, and it was quickly shuttled to rehab for treatment. The following morning, the fledgling was identified as L4 by local birders on the ground.

Upon initial evaluation, L4 is doing well and seems alert, stable, and standing without issues. A further diagnosis is needed to determine if L4 suffered any injuries that will need further treatment or rehabilitation. We will be sure to update the community on L4’s condition as soon as we know more.

Throughout the history of the Cornell Hawks nest, the staff at the Janet L. Swanson Wildlife Hospital has provided invaluable support and care for the fledglings. We are immensely grateful for their dedicated team for immediately attending to L4, and for continuing to support the recovery and rehabilitation of fledgling L3 after suffering a shoulder injury in late July.

Angel & Tom have / HAD a baby!
April 29, 2023
At dawn I see a shell with a baby hawk under Angel

The egg hatched overnight.
In the morning Angel flew off for breakfast and mate Tom arrived to something wiggly in the nest.  I dont know if he stepped on it accidently or what, but its dead.  Poor Angel cried over it.

Big Red arrives back at the nest and settles in on the eggs as Arthur departs. After a few minutes of rearranging, all is calm on the nest high above campus.

First Egg Hatches at the #CornellHawks! Welcome to the world M1 | May 6, 2023https://youtu.be/EZjFyNbryoQvia cornell labs bird cam

A Red-tailed Hawk pair has been nesting above Cornell University’s athletic fields since 2012. They have made use of two different light towers for their nest sites. In 2012, 2015, and 2018–2021 they used a tower near Fernow Hall, and in 2013, 2014, and 2016, they used the tower nearest Weill Hall. We installed cameras at both of these sites to get a better look at the intimate behavior of these well-known birds as they raise their young amid the bustle of a busy campus.

A little history on the pair...
Arthur on the left Big Red on the right...

Third Egg Revealed During a Snowy Morning At the Cornell Red-tailed Hawks! March 23, 2024 https://youtu.be/FK9fL_alp18?feature=shared VIA CORNELL LAB BIRD CAMS
A winter weather advisory was no match for the methodical breeding approach of Big Red and Arthur! A third egg was laid by Big Red under cover of darkness, and we got a great daylight look at the triple clutch as Arthur stood to shake off a coating of snow, rolling the eggs gently before settling back in with a patience that is enviable. Congratulations!
