A pair of bald eagles recently joined the Alcoa Davenport community in Iowa where they built their 7-foot nest on our 400-acre facility, ready to start a family. Soon after, Alcoa launched an “Eaglecam” – a small video camera mounted near the nest with a live video feed – to follow and document the life of these eagles. After local employees named the two eagles Liberty and Justice, Alcoa launched a global poll to name the eaglet, which was born in late March.

Already, nearly 200,000 visitors from across the globe have tuned in to witness an American icon, the bald eagle, developing live within this unique eco-system. Watch the developing eaglet as it approaches its biggest milestone yet – its first flight – in late May or early June. Alcoa is proud that our unwavering commitment to environmental sustainability is helping conserve our precious natural resources.

I decided to bring this into a new topic since references have been made about this nest in four or five threads including Miscellaneous Raptors, Beak Room,  and even Decorah. In fact, the Miscellaneous Raptors thread got renamed "Davenport" in the last few posts.

Another reason is that I have seen a number of videos uploaded to youtube by Elfruler and will cite a number of them as your beginnings to the Davenport Eagle Nest.

Mounting up on wings like eagles....

Alice, thank you for starting this thread and for going to all that trouble to link my videos.  This nest is about 140 miles south and a little east of the Decorah nest, and the tree is right on the Mississippi River (http://www.alcoa.com/locations/usa_davenport/en/pdf/map-alcoa_quadcities.pdf).  Although the cam is not an RRP operation, it is the only other eagle cam in Iowa besides the one at Decorah, so it certainly seems that the nest, its occupants, and the cam deserve their own thread on this forum.

Here is a summary of the nest's history from the Alcoa Davenport works site:
"The two parent eagles, we have named Liberty and Justice, began building this nest in 2009. In the spring of 2010 they fledged two eaglets from this nest. In the fall of 2010 we met with U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service and then installed the camera on a branch above the nest. This year the eagles tended to two eggs. The first was laid on February 17th and the second on February 20th.

We brought the camera on-line on March 22nd. The first egg hatched on March 26th and the second egg on March 27th. The second eaglet to hatch was small, did not thrive and only lived about a week. The first eaglet has thrived and online voting named her Freedom. Freedom began flying outside of the nest on June 3rd. We would expect to see Freedom in the nest part of the day until she heads out on her own. Last year when there were two eaglets, they stayed around until late July/early August."

Indeed, Freedom did fledge successfully in June, and perhaps even now is keeping company with D1.   Grin

Staff at Alcoa Davenport Works installed a new cam this year, with high quality and sound.

The adults have been in the nest a lot more than the adults at Decorah over the last 2-3 weeks.  Just this morning, in fact, I have video capture running right now as both adults have returned to the nest after that extremely windy day on Thursday.

Alcoa Davenport Works manufacture rolled aluminum products, including "metal for every space vehicle in America’s program."  The company has a strong commitment to responsible environmental stewardship (http://www.alcoa.com/locations/usa_davenport/en/info_page/overview.asp).

Elf: Thanks for the vids and the history of the nest. I got curios about these two when you uploaded your first vid. I've only caught them briefing at the nest. So thanks for all the vids so I can see them.

Elf and Alice,

Thanks for the video links.  I am here too, but not too often.  CuriousII behind the doberman, I have been unable to get to the Live due to "buffering" stuff during the few times I can attempt.  I am depending upon and taking from you "guys/gals".  Thanks for the ride I will try to "pay it forward", promise.

Alice, thanks for pointing out this nest.  No eagles at the nest just now, but could hear the windblowing.

aaaarrrrrggggghhhhh!  Missed it, had to leave the house for a while.  Rats.

On the other hand, look what I saw while I was out gadding about:

Just after I snapped that, this beauty took off and soared above the river back and forth a few times, right before my eyes, for my viewing pleasure.  I didn't even need binocs!

Glad you don't leave home without the camera. Nice!  What's the second bird in the tree?

Well, it was my phone, hence the pretty grainy quality.  One of elebenty billion crows perched in trees above the river.  This was the only eagle in view.

Fly-in at Davenport, and I'm capturing this time.   Smiley

And now both eagles are there.

If you missed, it, here's the full video.  Some real fun nestorizing:

Elf: Thanks for the vid. I caught some of it live. I watched the vid too. I wish both would look at the camera the same time. I still can't tell who is who !
