The mating video was one of the coolest things I've ever seen. Absolutely fascinating. Many thanks to those who recorded it and how exciting that we're now all on "egg alert"!

Woot! Thanks Charlie, Elf, Mick for the videos and Finn for the info. We're expecting- need cushy pillows for face plants, dinner bells to announce hunger and bulls-eye targets placed on the edges of the nest for PS contests. What if they hatch on Valentines Day? Or is that too soon?

takes about 30 days of incubation prior to hatch and since most eggs, if more than one, come a day or so later not all hatch at once.

It takes approximately 35-39 days for an eagle egg to hatch.
Source CCB: Average 35 to 38 days. Usually a day or two longer for the first two eggs of a 3 egg clutch. You will notice (and probably become very concerned) that the adults do not seem to be incubating the first eggs enough. Trust them. They have done this before and know of what they do.
During last 2-3 days before hatching, the parents can hear & feel the activity inside the egg & will watch the egg closely. Once the hatchling has begun to breathe, it might make soft calls that the adults can hear. The adult will spend less time incubating.

Squee: that quietness after copulation is call "post copulation lethargy." The female becomes quite lethargic and crouches in a stationary position--possibly to allow the male's sperm to travel up her cloacal opening into the oviduct because the sperm isn't deposited deeply inside her as it would be if the male had a penis. As time passes, and the eggs start to form inside the female, she will spend increasing amounts of time in a sleeping posture with her head tucked under. This then becomes what is known as "egg-laying lethargy"--the period of egg laying lethargy and egg laying itself lasts for about one week. [Don't mean to x-rated here, folks, just providing info from Scott Nielsen's personal observations of a pair of mated eagles in A Season with Eagles.]

Oh, joy, joy, joy. Mom and Dad Decorah are on their way! I'm so thrilled and thankful to be able to see their mating ritual on video. Thanks, all.

Mayree: Thank you so much....just snapped up one of those reasonably priced copies of A Season with Eagles that you pointed out....I tried last year and the prices being charged were outlandish. Now all I will have to do is pry myself away from nest watching long enough to read it!

For those in the know - Amy or anyone - I read on SS that there have 4 new volunteers for panning? True or false? If so, awesome that Bob can maybe get some other projects done this spring with the falcons?
