Since today is the last day for the Norfolk Botanical Gardens three 2011 Eaglets, I would like to start a new thread here in the forum dealing with the Wildlife Center of Virginia's Critter Cam. Since the eaglets were removed from Norfolk their journey was fist captured by the television station WVEC and then when WCV got its own camera at
http://wildone.org/eaglecam/wildlife-center-web-cam/

Many of the recent posts in the Norfolk Botanical Garden thread started by Kittenface on January 18, 2011, have really dealt with the WCV.
We will definitely keep track of the Norfolk Dad and the 2011 eaglets in the original thread.

But now this WCV camera plans to cover a lot of things from birds, to reptiles, to furry critters.
Right now they are conducting a little poll to see what the readers think will be the next focus of the camera.

What animal do you think the Wildlife Center will be showing next on the Critter Cam?..
Snake
Broad-Winged Hawk
Box Turtle
Great Horned Owl
Baby Squirrels
Barred Owl

We know they are building a new exhibit enclosure for Buddy.

So lets watch the WCV critter cam and come here with information, comments, pictures, and videos.

Did you guess right? I did, perhaps because of the new camera Bob set up.

YOU ARE WATCHING BROAD-WINGED HAWKS ON WCV'S CRITTER CAM.

You are now viewing two Broad-winged hawk patients on the Critter Cam. Patients #11-1434 and #11-1568.
For complete information visit:
http://www.wildlifecenter.org/wp/2011/08/broad-winged-hawks/

I'm going to have to start researching again!  Wink

Some interesting reading:

http://www.wildlifecenter.org/wp/2011/04/boy-or-girl/
http://www.wildlifecenter.org/wp/2011/05/dna-testing-results-round-one/

You will notice that the far wall is a solid board as opposed to the netting for the eagles. Also, the hawk is watching one of the WCV workmen repair a roof slate that got knocked lose by the recent hurricane.
The colored picture is of the Grayson County Hawk, the adult, which these two were originally paired with upon arrival at the center.

I was excited to see the broad-winged hawks! The Wildlife Center did a great job getting the cam back up so quickly!  Looking forward to learning about hawks!    Grin

Basic information regarding the Broad Winged Hawks can be found on the WCV website at
Frequently Asked Questions about Broad-winged Hawks
http://www.wildlifecenter.org/wp/2011/08/faq-broad-winged-hawks/

I posted a link earlier regarding Buddy's new enclosure. I was so worried about it during the hurricane. WCV doesn't cut down trees when it builds, it builds around them; you will notice the tree in the flight cage with the hawks. Also, yesterday I mentioned that a roof slat had become dislodged because a tree limb fell on the flight cage and it had to be repaired. There had been a squirrel in the cage which used the opening to make a quick get--a-way when the hawks were introduced.

WVC has posted some new pictures of the progress on Buddy's new home.

WCV is doing its part all the time with rescued animals. I had seen the original post and picture of this Essex County Bald Eagle (Bald Eagle, #11-2088) which was found in Essex County, Virginia in very thin condition. It was admitted on August 21, 2011 and given a prognosis of fair. I just never realized how many of these great birds are injured each year. Thank goodness for alert people and trained handlers.
You can read the most recent update at

Danceladyjan just uploaded a video from today's workout in the flight cage with the two hawks. Wouldn't you just love to have these preceptor's jobs?

WCV has to pay, and pay big time, to watch this camera, I find it a lot harder now to just check in as I did when NX and KS were there; not much action then. But these two are in constant motion. One seems to be very interested in the ceiling. Whether at the far end of the cage or on the swinging perch at this end it constantly looks to the ceiling and has made a number of attempts to fly up there.

These hawks are a riot.  They both are active, but the one (without the legband) just seems so intent upon flying through the roof.  Grin

Please join us on Thursday, September 8th at 11 a.m. to noon EDT on the moderated discussion for an informative session with Dr. Miranda. This session will take you through what happens when Wildlife Center patients first arrive and what their exam and care include.

I really wish some of our members would check out this new camera at WCV. It doesn't run overnight, so you have to watch daytime between about 7:00 AM EDT to about 7 PM EDT.
http://wildone.org/eaglecam/wildlife-center-web-cam/

These Hawks are so funny. It won't be long before they are completely rehabbed and will be released. The new enclosure for Buddy is really moving along. Despite another two days of rain there, the staff has really moved forward with preparations. But as long as there is no activity in the EagleCrest nest, I am watching these hawks (broad tails) to get to know about them and move a little away from the eagles.
The unbanded bird is much more active. After doing his tricks at this end of the cage he moved to the other end and spent the next hour or better just running back and forth on the perch, up to his bunk mate and back to the walls. If there were sound I'd bet he was yacking at him. A few times he ran and jumped over the other perched hawk.
