If some of you want to learn more about red tails, in addition to all the info you can find just by googling, check out www.birdwatchingdaily.com. In their forum, there's a topic called "Backyard", and a thread called "Three Baby Red Tails in the Nest!" I have followed this thread for about three years as Snowbird compiles the activities of Flint and Flora, a red tail couple on her farm near Decorah. It makes for very interesting reading.

What a great newspaper article about this new project! Thank you to Mr. David McDonald for putting the cam on his property and to Bob Anderson, the Bird Cam Wizard.
Aren't we forturnate that Mr. McDonald enjoyed the Decorah 5 so much that he asked Bob and RRP to do this - now we can all learn about Hawks!! And who is going to be our knowledgable mods about hawks???

Wow bookworm. These pictures are stunning!!! Thanks for posting the link. Red-tails are around my area; just don't see enough of them.

Great link bookworm, thank you!
I especially loved this bit and the picture that went along with it:

Poster ("RamblinRaptor") on UStream chat had lots of information this morning: there is a pond located to the right of the tree (you could see it when Bob(?) panned the camera this morning); tree is an oak tree and nest is about 60 feet up in the tree; RamblinRaptor also said that a pair of hawks had been nesting in this tree for at least 12 years and that they hang out on the pond side of the tree in the upper branches. [You can apparently hear them off and on all day.] Also tree is located about 400 feet from the nearest building on the property. There will be 3 camera views of the nest but the one from the PTZ cam will be seen the most; there will also be an infra-red camera trained on the nest at night.

In the Decorah thread, MpMom posted a link to a page with info on the Bald Eagle. Using her link I did a search on Red Tailed Hawk. This is the link to the sound tab for red tailed hawks. Lots of other good info here. http://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Red-tailed_Hawk/sounds

I'm wondering how they'll refer to the birds. "Mom" and "Dad" have already been used.

Earlier this a.m. I saw a small bird land in the nest, take a twig and take off.

I think it was a red-winged blackbird.

Red-winged Blackbird? Uh-oh. They're the ones that gave Decorah eagles a hard time. They even hitched rides on their backs, when they weren't dive-bombing them.

I understand that they get eaten by the redtails--so they'd better watch out.

I took this at about 5:50 AM but this is the first chance I have had to upload. There were two of them but I only caught one in my picture.
