I loved how right after the synchronized neck craning the one turned to the other and started squeeing.

LOL! Such a sweet surprise to this clip! A true conversation between them all! Glad everyone enjoyed the video - it helped me with my Decorah withdrawal  Cheesy

I loved that too. It was like they were saying 'hey did you see that?'  and "what the heck did you think about that' So darned funny.  it was like humans watching a tennis match. LOL.

I love the squeeing...reminded me of  E2/D1  Smiley Smiley

Me too! As I posted on the Decorah thread, I thought it would be interesting for everyone to see the comparison between E2 and her equally boisterous California cousin  Wink

Thanks for sending the video of the West End eaglets-in-conversation, Myth.  It is really funny.

Because I’m not as familiar with the Catalina Island nests, I began to do a little research and found this link to the page on the Channel Islands Live Eagle Cam Discussion Forum that details - with beautiful photos and video - the day the West End nest triplets were banded: http://z7.invisionfree.com/CHIL_EagleCAM/index.php?showtopic=6270

This was discussed in the other Catalina thread (located in the “Off Topic” section), but I think it can be repeated in this new thread. So fascinating! The trek to the nest was led by Dr. Peter Sharpe, the Research Wildlife Ecologist at the Institute for Wildlife Studies (IWS) who directs the bald eagle restoration and monitoring projects on Santa Catalina and Santa Cruz Islands. The longer video includes the concerned and not-too-happy parents (Dad is K01 and Mom is “Wray”) dive-bombing (IWS description) the party as they close in on the nest. http://s111.photobucket.com/albums/n133/sharpe_01/Breeding%20Season%202011/?action=view&current=WEbanding2011forUpdate.mp4

As several commented on the other Catalina thread, I am amazed at how calm and quiet the eaglets remained during the whole process. Remarkable to see the nest from this perspective and to see the actual banding, measuring and especially the application of the VHF radio telemetry backpack (something we didn’t see with Decorah’s E2) and that no hoods were placed on these eaglets.

Shorter footage of the event actually shows an eaglet being gently retrieved from the West End nest:
http://s111.photobucket.com/albums/n133/sharpe_01/Breeding%20Season%202011/?action=view&current=Catalina_West_End_Eagles.mp4

All in all, it’s truly amazing footage. When looking at these island nests, I am struck by the fact that these eaglets must really learn from their parents how to fish from the vast ocean (their version of an Iowa fish hatchery, I guess!)

Myth, love this.  They certainly are LOUD!    Smiley  But they also have a very different sound or maybe tone than their Decorah cousins. Love the two heads tilted in unison. The banding seemed as if it were done so gently and quietly.

I met a chatter on another eagle watch site and he referred me to
http://www.iws.org/bald_eagles/nestchat.html.
He said that since the 2011 eaglets have already fledged on all three nests, they haven't been returning to the nest rarely, and the camera would probably be shut down soon.

I have checked back a multitude of times  for about a week and this is the only life I have seen. on the Two Harbors Nest.

A few wing tags caught this AM on the the West End nest.

Caught these other pics on the West End Nest this AM. Shows the orange wing tags

BTW did you know there was discussion about this nest on another thread

It looks like the merge of the two threads has occurred. Thank you Amy.

Good morning, Alice.  I too just checked the Island nests and only saw one eaglet on the West End stream.  Sounds like they are doing well.  Certainly their food source is plentiful there as well.

Thanks for the great pics Alice and yes, I've been watching these three for awhile now.  Being a "water/ocean" person, I've especially loved the view.  I believe the numbers on these babies are 12,13, 14.  My initial thought was it was really a leap of faith for these e's to fledge, since there are no branches nearby!!  I watched a video of how they received their "badges" and it was remarkable how docile they were with the humans!

The other thread was opened last night I believe.  I had this one "off topic" when I opened it since it didn't involve our Decorah e's.  I should have opened it on the "other raptor cam" thread, but, alas, here it is and I really don't want to delete it, as there is some good information on it.

Mounting up on wings like eagles....

Enjoy this video of the two Catalina brothers speaking to their sister (who is sitting on top of the camera pole and therefore not seen….but boy, she can be heard!): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQHBdVMO7tA

Myth, this video is priceless!  What I loved (besides the synchronized neck craning and the eye-ball-to-eyeball moment) was noticing that when one squeed, another one began to squee almost instinctively -- like an involuntary reaction -- and then the next one joined in, one right after the other.  We often discussed in Ustream chat what made them talk.  Well here it seems pretty obvious that some talking seems like a reflex in response to hearing another talking.

Thanks for posting this!

Oh, no, I am definitely not suggesting that you delete it. Anyone used to maneuvering around the forum will find it, and they certainly did. I just meant that these people might also like to see what else is being said on the other thread.

I also thought it was cool to hear the sea lions in the background of the first vid.

Yes, I love hearing the sea lions and the waves crashing...it's California version of the Decorah lawn mower and horses whinnying!
