i have deleted the two "technical" posts I made today on the Decorah Eagle thread that dealt with hearing and mating.  I have also reviewed all my post to be sure they are living room posts and not sports bar!!
Elf, I agree with your comment.  We don't want to divide people by groups only to segregate our conversations and topics.  Hopefully, this addition will encourage the more wide-ranging discussions and help to restore the original atmosphere of the Decorah eagles thread.

I plan on visiting both threads and keeping my posts relevant and appropriate depending upon the thread.

As you are well aware the Ustream chatters (including myself) are more accustomed to a pretty wide variety of discussion.  Again, hopefully this will help to remind us of our focus depending upon which thread we are participating in.
Thanks, shuff, this forum actually is a perfect place to make the conversations that we all want to have easier to follow and to participate in.  I'm so glad you started this new thread, and pretty soon I'm sure it will sort itself out as the place for folks to have those detailed discussions of eagle biology, behavior, etc., that some find so fascinating.  And the Decorah Eagles thread will continue to be the place to revel in our beautiful family!

For those of you still a bit confused about how to navigate here, just think of the forum as chat, except with room dividers -- one conversation is going on here, another there.  Please feel free to migrate from room to room!  Won't it be a lot more fun to have good, satisfying conversations, than to try to shout to make oneself heard?  And get frustrated if no one answers?

thanks Pagent, Shuff, and Elf  --  i was one of the confused ones!!  you all have helped clarify.  i do not understand why you would want to remove your technical information posts -- if you remove them from the other thread, would you re-post here please?  and please, don't "dumb-down" your answers -- i am finding a lot of people here who. do understand! maybe just encourage the ones without the technical knowledge to get explanations as needed.

Yes I did know about the heartbeat.
While we are at it.  Dad's first nest was stolen from a Red Tail Hawk (that is the nest that fell when the branch broke).

Pagent, I missed the part about Dad stealing the nest from the hawk.  Pretty interesting.  Dad is one smart dude.  He got the best real estate and he capitalized on the foundation of an existing nest.  Well, they say that eagles try to expend as little energy as possible to get the things they need.  I'm pretty impressed with his ingenuity.

Correction!  I misread Pagent's post and thought it said the Red-Tailed Hawk stole the nest from Dad!  Please disregard my last post.  Must have been a little dislexic today. Tongue

RE: mating pairs and ongoing recognition -- shifted post from the Decorah eagles thread

There is an interesting account from a wildlife rehab center in New York (Bless the Beasts Foundation) regarding a pair of adult eagles in their care that supports the notion that there is some vocalization bonding that is recognized.

First the female eagle was rescued and is being treated for injuries  Several months later the same rehab center rescued an injured male.  When the male was introduced into the flight cage  -- their interactions through vocalizations have led to the conclusion they were a breeding pair in the local area. The local news did a feature with an interview with the rehab director in which she notes that the behavior she witnessed was not expected from raptors.  Here are the weblinks:  http://blessthebeastsinc.webs.com/ - note the video AND then view the picture slide show at http://www.pbase.com/horsefeathers/eagles_2011.

It is a real treat to have discovered this forum, and to see familiar mods/participants from the UStream Chat.  I'm learning so much from both threads.  Thanks to all.

loisanne what an interesting story.  i have speculated that the vocalization is part of the pair bonding. Especially given the information that Finn provided.  Which was eagle imprint on the species and not on the individual.   Thanks for the story.

Treetop glad you are here.  There are very knowledgeable people here and you will learn much.  The information is fascinating and so educational.  Stay tuned.  Love having you aboard!

Pagent, where did you hear the above about the Red Tail Hawk? I didn't know that.

Thank you, Shuff!  I'm going to try following both threads to see if one suits me better than the other.  I expect I will enjoy both!  Wink

Me too!

I suspect that we all will enjoy both threads.  It just takes getting used to some additional navigation but I think it's well worth it.  I love the fact that we can have in depth and theoretical conversations sharing the information we have come across or the questions that we have all been asking or thinking.  Both threads will provide value to our experience.

There is room for both threads and we will all gain by participating in both.  There are some very amazing people here and we can benefit from them all.

I am friends with several folks in Decorah who are well aware of this Eagle family and shared that info with me regarding the former nest on the hill.  Dad challenged for the nest and won!!
