Just an update to everyone on the pair of falcons at the Mayo clinic.  The pair appear to be incubating eggs as of this past week, although the female is very hypersensitive to all human activity on ANY nearby rooftop, not necessarily the roof of the building that has the box on it.  The male is very busy trying to keep things warm and we are hopeful that the female calms down and settles on the eggs.  Time will tell and I hope to have some good news in late May.  Stay tuned.

I was able to confirm that the pair are doing a great job incubating the unknown number of eggs.  Hatching should happen by the holiday weekend and we will be installing a better camera soon.  No date has been scheduled yet for the banding, but will be in the afternoon due to auditorium availability.  When we get the new camera installed and when I get the banding scheduled, I will be sure to share with the forum.

Because we had some great WARM weather for once, we decided to add the new camera to the nest box on the Mayo Clinic building.  The female barely moved and the entire process took less than 10 minutes.  The female barely stood up and we confirmed two eggs that are being incubated.  We are still several weeks away from hataching but it is nice to know the female was very  attentive and took the installation in true "mom" form.  Stay tuned for a banding date and enjoy the new view!

Hatching should happen by Thursday at the latest.  She has been very "futsy" this afternoon compared to the past month.  Maybe a pip?

Obviously I was wrong on the pipping and guessing when hatching would occur.  What was egg laying rather than incubation is now evident or that the eggs are not hatching.  Time will tell-crossing my fingers...this is my favorite urban site I manage.  The whole opportunity and the involvement of the clinic and community is just amazing.

Some bad news: a chick was hatching this past Tuesday and one of the adults grabbed the chick (haven't confirmed it as aggression or not) and removed from box.  One more egg to go.

I am sorry it has taken so long to get this out to everyone, but things have been pretty chaotic for us this past week.

Since the second egg did not hatch within a few days of the first, the chances of it ever hatching is 0.  The egg will be pulled in the near future, if the adults don't do something to it first.  This is not uncommon for young female falcons (this female is just two years old).

We are hopeful that the pair would be more productive in 2012.

Just to let everyone know that a pair of falcons are back in town and showing a lot of interest in the nest box on the east side of the Mayo building.  We have a partial band reading on the male, who is a new male on territory.  I will be making my second trip down the Mississippi river on the 26th, so I will get you the information by then, if not before.
