March 27, 2011

The intruder male continues to come to the nest to nestorate or bring food offerings to Belle.  She has quickly mantled the food and eaten or left.  She seems to be on the upper branch quite often.  Liberty has not been back to the nest.  Belle and the Intruder have been peacefully on the nest together several times a day for the last 3 days.  He is smitten with her and is trying to bond with her.  some have begun to call him SMitty, not liking the name intruder.  Belle has not given up on her nest, but he seems to be very comfy there.  Looks like we have witnessed a territory take over.  We will have to wait to see if Belle stays or what else happens in this unfolding story.  Many wish to see Belle and Liberty together again at this nest.

I found 2 interesting videos today. This first one almost looks like an attempted mating.

and this by Paulaeagletmomster . From tonight, Belle and the new male working peacefully on the nest. They are creating a hole and at one point the egg is uncovered.

The Shepherdstown eagles....young male and Belle are working on the nest.  The cam is live this last week and hearing the eagle calls is wonderful.  It is deer hunting season so from time to time shots are heard.  The nest has really been reworked with high sides.  ( They did find Liberty near the watershed building about a month after he disappeared.  I am not sure if there was a for sure id, but many feel it was Liberty.  This was a territory take over and Belle has stayed at the nest and accepted the young male that many are calling Smitty....as he was smitten with Belle.)

Got this info about the male as far as his name is unoffically of course

OK ... the Momsters voting is done ..... it was down to 2 names ... Beau and Shep. The winning name is Shep.

"Shep stands for Shepherdstown and it refers to our hopes and wishes that he will guide many eaglets and shepherd them towards fledging"

Patis your not wrong the cam has/had infared but I guess there must be something wrong right now.

It has been almost a month since I've checked into this nest in Shepherdstown. There has been as much action there as in the other Eagle nests around the country. On the 8th I was watching early when Dad arrived and jumped all over Mom's back for about a minute, then both went about their own stick/fluff rearrangements. This camera is not as clear as some of the others; but it is fun to watch.

Our eagle pair have been tending to the nest and we are getting very close to the time that we could see some eggs. Nesting competition continues to be an issue here in Shepherdstown, as we have seen at least one intruder come through in the past week or two. The healthy population of bald eagles in the region is causing more competition for nesting habitat. You can see a video of the intruder being violently ejected from the nest by one of the resident birds at this link:

I think Mom just laid an egg

Here you go, a great video. It takes from her very first actions that she was laying, through the egg check. Dad you will notice just continues  to the nest.

I really hope things will go well for Belle this year. There was an intruder in the nest year, and her egg with Ben was taken.  Watch them like hawks um .... eagles eyes .. this year Belle and Spot.
