Can someone please tell me where this nest is - I believe it is on the Mississippi and I wonder if we are able to see it from the road or is it off limits?  Thanks.

The nest can only practically be viewed by the webcam.  It's mounted on a coal building on plant property.  I've been there and their are multple sets of stairs to get to the nest but once you get to the nest, the view of the St Croix is breath taking.  No wonder they nest there!  If you have access to a boat or take one of the scenic boat trips, you can float by.  I've always wondered if the coal dust was harmful to them.  But TT, an offspring from many years ago, is still alive and well as are his parents so I guess they are ok.

I wonder does anyone know if the daily pictures will be working again? Thanks

I've emailed Amy and she's contacted Bob.  I haven't check for a couple of days, but on the regular cam, the 3 are still there.

The Xcel osprey cam can indeed be seen from the road if you have a scope. If you proceed up 95 north from Bayport, take the shortcut that heads up towards 36 and when you are part way up that hill you can look back on the King Plant and see the nest. There is a little sideroad that I can park on to view and with my Nikon Fieldsope 80 I can see the nest very well. Of course you will see more details of nest activity on the cam, but if you just want a larger view, want to see the birds coming and going or get a sense of where the nest is in relation to the surrounding area, it can be seen.

PS. In writing my annual report on the Ospreys in the metro area I came upon this address in my field notes...from which you can view the King Plant nest: Pickett Ave and 56th St N.   Look east to the black barge unloader next to the white bldg.

http://news.dnr.state.mn.us/2012/03/15/nesting-ospreys-have-a-new-alternate-home-in-becker-county/

Nesting ospreys have a new alternate home in Becker County

(Released March 15, 2012)

A new platform on a tall pole to accommodate nesting ospreys has been installed in Becker County by Xcel Energy, according to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR).

Ospreys like to nest on very tall structures, such as cell phone towers or power transmission lines. From time to time, these structures need to be replaced; in other cases, the nests may cause a fire hazard. When this happens, a state permit is issued to the power company to remove the unoccupied osprey nest. While they are not required to, some power companies go above and beyond their duty and put up a new structure – just for the birds.

In a 2004 Nongame Wildlife survey, about 60 percent of osprey nests in the state were found to be on artificial structures. Wild ospreys prefer very tall, dead trees to nest in.

“Dead trees are rarely left standing,” said Carrol Henderson, supervisor of the DNR’s Nongame Wildlife Program. “If they are left standing, they don’t stand for very long with a 1,000 pound nest on it. Therefore, a company willing to leave the nest on their structure, or willing to provide a new place for the birds to nest, is to be commended.”

Erecting a new pole is beneficial for the birds, as well as power companies, Henderson said.

“Putting up a new structure eliminates the need to issue a new permit every year and will provide a more attractive nesting structure,” Henderson said. “It also provides a much safer platform for the birds to build their nest and raise a new family of young ospreys.”

The goose at King Plant may have laid an egg!  I watched her this morning and she was fussing with the nesting material and a very white spot kept appearing then disappearing under the nesting material.   Time will tell.

I was at work when I saw the egg this morning.  Watching from home, I was able to get a screen shot of 2 eggs!

I thought so too when I looked at it after I saved it.  I think it's the white part of the bottom of her head which is tilted.
